Disney Aracuan

Disney Aracuan

Mark Kennedy from the “Temple of the Seven Golden Camels” wrote a nice post about Character design some time ago. This will inaugurate the creation of a new Character Design category on my blog. Character design is something I would like to focus on one day but this is not my priority right now. In the meantime I will collect articles that could prove useful.

Confessions of a Lazy Character Designer

Thanks Keith for the heads up, with Philip Hunt, Marc Craste is also one of my favourite directors. I guess that video was shot during Berlin’s Pictoplasma exhibition earlier this year.

Since I am back to Symbian and my Nokia N95, I have been hunting for similar application to the ones I am used to on Windows Mobile.

Nokia sport traker is awesome! That software (or Apps for the hipsters) is very easy to use, only requires few buttons pressing and saves all your datas to a calendar automatically so you can easily set targets and evaluate how close you are getting to your goals.

Some animation showreels from animators who worked on “Cloudy with a chance of meatballs” have surfaced on the net. I am unsure if this was a very good idea since the movie has only been out for few week around the world but well… the movie is great so here is one more opportunity to see some of the best shots and maybe convince your friends to GO AND WATCH IT!

I found that 17 minutes tour of Pixar with Pete Docter and Jonas Rivera. It looks like it was especially recorded for french website Allocine so you might have not seen it before.

EA

well, I just started working for the UK branch of Electronic Arts, the Bright Light studio located in beautiful Guildford. The only thing I can say is that it is a new IP and it is a really cool project. I am doing a crazy amount of commuting between Guildford and London at the moment but hopefully I will be able to settle down very quickly and find the time for my personal projects.

Low Poly tools

Low Poly tools

Here are the tools I am using in the low polygon modeling videos.

1. Merge Vertex tool
2. Delete History
3. Freeze transformations
4. Extrude
5. Split polygon tool
6. Bevel
7. Cut faces tool
8. Insert Edge Loop tool
9. Select Edge Loop Tool
10. Slide Edge Tool

Nothing fancy, just basic Maya tools. Merge Vertex tool only appeared in Maya 2009 though.

Cloudy with a chance of …. Eyeballs!

with a chance of eyeballs

with a chance of eyeballs

Have you seen Sony’s latest attempt at swiping Pixar and Dreamworks from the best Feature animation studio’s crown?

Because of it’s really plain looking character design, “Cloudy with a chance of meatballs” might have flown under the radars of a lot of animation fans but if you go pass the designs, you will realise that the underdog is a new home run from the Culver city studio. Yes the story is not revolutionary but that movie is once again a great piece of entertainment served with amazing rendering, gorgeous visual effects, funny lines and wacky animation.

One of those wacky shots I am referring to is the Eyeball shot by the dock.

How lucky! David Anthony Gibson, the animator behind it: has decided to share with use some insights.
